For the buffer image.
One of my favourite 1/18ths, RACCCCEEEE CAAAAARRRRRR.
As of this year the Ontario Gov’t increased minimum wage to $14/hr, up from $11.60/hr. Prior to the increase I was earning $13.25/hr do the increase did not affect me that much. The jump of $3.30/hr was too much. I feel it’s affecting the restaurant industry the most. It’s also more noticeable in the moral at work. Every one is more bitchy now.
Before the mandatory raise it was good: hours, money, & attitude. Since the increase every thing has gone up. Hours are also down, I understand basic economics. So I get why.
Through certain co-workers I’ve been told the owner/chef & management (only salary staff) have got raises, & increased benefits. Whether it’s true or not I don’t know, but highly believable.
Corporate chain restaurants I think won’t be affected by the increase as much, where I work it’s not corporate. It has its draw backs & perks. Being not corporate the owner can do what ever he decides without a board to decide. Unfortunately he is using that to his full advantage.
So yea, the restaurant industry is going down hill, & where I work the core group of kitchen staff when have been together for 2.5 years can’t afford fuck all. Nobody can afford to pay their bills. All of us have complained & the owner blows it off like it’s nothing. Next (January 2019) min wage is going up too $15/hr, so that ship is going to be fun to watch burn.
It’s also killing quality work, I started at $11.25/hr, then worked my way up to $12/hr, then $13.25/hr over the course of almost 2 years. Now Jimmy off street can come in and scrub pots & pans then half ass the job, he’ll earn $14/hr to sit on his ass. We have hired people who have experience & started then at the now minimum wage prior to the increase. I feel they deserve more, but that’s not my decision. We just hired a cook with 20+ years industry experience, if I was in the industry that long to earn min wage I be mad.
It’s a slap in the face to people who have bust their ass to earn their pay, it’s tough high stress industry with a high turn over rate (gone through 30+ staff since I started). There are people that deserve more $/hr, they worked for it.
It’s a shame it’s going down this way, it use to be I looked forward to go to work. Now I get there & it’s the same complaining happens every day, & moral is down. I love the restaurant industry greatly & hope there’s a way to overcome this issue, I hate see it end on such a low note. The Gov’t to blame they heard most say min wage needs too go up, I agree it did but they handled it in a bad manner.

One of the many problems with minimum wage, and one that people don’t bring up frequently enough. The biggest cheerleaders of minimum wage are:
People making minimum wage.
People indexed to minimum wage (certain unions).
In real life, you can’t change the wage that quickly because of exactly what you describe. It turns into a backstabbing cesspool of hearsay and resentment, as well as fewer people having to work harder. Your “thanks” is no longer a raise, it’s being able to keep your job.
The deeper pocketed employers can absorb some level of hit to their margins to keep longtime employees on board. But that’s not always the case...

The increase from $11.25/hr to $11.60/hr was not bad. I got my first raise before it went to $11.60/hr, so that did not affect me

Same thing happened to me years ago whilst working at a large international airport. I started out at $8.78/hr tossing bags, once working 32 hours straight, no sleep, just to make ends meet. In quick succession I became a dispatcher, working up into management and was responsible for biannual manpower planning as well as 7-figures worth of billing on a monthly basis, all of which went out without error. After 5 years I had made it to a whopping $15.00/hr (and this was after making $32.50/hr when in IT - recessions suck ).
(never was this graphic more appropriate)
Then the city came out with the living wage ordinance. Now some shmoe off the street was making the same thing I was making, and all he had to do was toss a few bags whereas I still had my billing, planning and supvisorial responsibilities. For. The. Same. Money. And of course they couldn’t raise the pay for management since they were now spending all of this extra money on the entry level employees. Yeah, morale fell through the floor, and their answer was just to fire all of the unhappy people instead of actually looking at
why
we were unhappy. Good riddance to that business.

I started in the dish pit, it sucked. I worked my way up, now a line cook. We’ll just expect Jimmy off the street to go above & beyond (first few weeks an exception) to make sure he deserves that $/hr.

Some time ago, I got hired for whatever job I was doing, for 10 bucks an hour. After three years and a promotion, I was up to $13.50. I found out the person who was hired to replace me started at the same wage that I was now making. Meaning someone doing the same job I was 3 years ago was making 35% more. Listening to them complain about their job and their pay made my blood boil.

If they have experience to match the pay, & do the job well without complaining I don’t have an issue. Saying that if they complain lots their hours are gonna be cut big time until they move on to another job(& repeat).

I made the mistake of looking at some payroll paperwork that the city I work for asked me to transport to be shredded. This was from when they had separate departments for streets, water/sewer, and maintenance.
Now it’s one department with four employees. They made more in 1983 with a lighter workload than I do now. That’s not adjusted for inflation either. They actually made more per hour. Adjusting for inflation they made more than double while doing less work and getting free health insurance compared to now where I pay for a portion of my insurance.
Not directly related to minimum wage, but it’s been bugging the shit out of me, and this seemed like a good place to vent about it.

This why we have a national minimum wage for unskilled labour and industry award wages for those with qualifications, skills and experience. And a legislative authority to act as a referee.
I haven’t earned so little as that since I was sweeping floors or digging holes on Uni break....and that was thirty years ago.
I’m about to leave a job paying $27/hr before tax for a period of unemployment in the pursuit of living somewhere new...

When I worked at a grocery store I did my duties. I got raises because I didn’t fuck off. It’s not like pushing carts is hard.
Some of the gals in the office had been there longer, and I guess were bitching I was paid more. After that all the pay checks were in envelopes.
Whatever.
